CNN —This week sees the opening of the Venice Biennale, an 8-month-long festival of art and culture staged every other year. For 2024 — the show’s 60th iteration — Brazilian curator Adriano Pedrosa has chosen the topic of “Foreigners Everywhere,” and announced an intention to spotlight artists from diverse and historically marginalized backgrounds. With the main event running from April 20 to November 24 2024, here’s our pick of what to see if you’re headed to Venice. “Willem de Kooning e l’Italia” — Willem de KooningThe show at Gallerie dell’Accademia will include 75 Willem de Kooning works, including "Screams of Children Come from Seagulls (Untitled XX)," 1975. CNN —At Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards, Gillian Anderson’s ivory, strapless, floor-grazing gown made not one but two statements. While upon first inspection, the chic wool and silk cady Gabriela Hearst creation epitomizes old Hollywood glamour, a closer look reveals a more subversive twist: The addition of tens of embroidered vulvas sewn onto the skirt. Speaking to Deadline on the Golden Globes red carpet, the “Sex Education” star explained that she chose it “for so many reasons,” and added, “It’s brand appropriate.”The star said she chose the subversive ivory creation for "so many reasons." According to the actor, each motif took craftspeople 3.5 hours to embroider, totaling around 150 hours. “It’s so comfortable,” she told Extra TV outside the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, where the ceremony was held.

CNN —Jane Birkin, the British singer and actress who found fame in France, has died aged 76, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported Sunday, citing its sources. She was the inspiration for the famous Birkin bag by French luxury house Hermes. Gainsbourg went on to write “Je t’aime… moi non plus” for Birkin and the song became an international hit that same year. She also managed to carve out a prolific career in the world of music, releasing several records in the French language. Dumas was true to his word and the Birkin bag was introduced in 1984.

CNN —Yasmeen Lari, widely recognised as Pakistan’s first female architect, has become the first woman since Zaha Hadid to win the prestigious Royal Gold Medal, awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Lari created the Zero Carbon Cultural Centre in 2011. The Pakistan State Oil Head Office in Karachi (shown here in 1984) was designed by Lari.
